Description

Incense burner with a decorated lid and pedestal base in Teotihuacan style. It features a bell-shaped lid with lateral handles, decorated with a human face framed within a circular medallion. The lid serves as the pedestal for a reliquary figure (often referred to as a “guest” or “host” figure), depicting an elderly individual wearing a rounded headdress resembling a hat and a skirt. The large ear ornaments are made of Spondylus shells, a spiny orange-red mollusk highly valued for jewelry and ritual use.

In his right hand, the figure holds a severed trophy head. On the chest, there is a small opening with a removable cover that, when lifted, reveals the face of another individual wearing a decorated headdress.

The base, not shown here, is biconical or hourglass-shaped and decorated with a motif of triangles joined at their vertices, resembling a bow-tie design.
