Obsidian lip plug with malachite inlay. According to obsidian specialist Selvin García (personal communication, August 10, 2026), the stone’s characteristics suggest it originated at the obsidian source of El Chayal , specifically the deposit of Azacualpilla. The interior of the obsidian displays irregular veining and a shading pattern characteristic of that location (García, personal communication, August 10, 2026). Although the donor described the object as a “jade or greenstone lip plug mounted on onyx,” anthropologist and lapidary artist Julia Bustos Vásquez (personal communication, August 10, 2026) identifies the stone as malachite. * Donation by Dr. Francis Robisek in 2006 and repatriated to Guatemala in 2009. |
