  • GLOBAL DIGITAL HERITAGE and KORÉ FORMACIÓN AT LA RUTA MAYA FOUNDATION

Guatemala, April 18, 2026

La Ruta Maya had the privilege of being the host organization of the specialized course in photogrammetry and 3D digitization taught to the staff and volunteers of La Ruta Maya as well as students of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG) and San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC).

This specialized workshop, designed exclusively for Guatemalan students, was funded by the Global Digital Heritage (https://gdh.org/) at the initiative of Dr. Herbert Maschner (President and Chief Scientist of GDH), who donated the digitization of 500 cultural heritage objects to La Ruta Maya in October 2025.

The course consisted of several virtual sessions via the platform of Koré Formación (https://koreformacion.com ) from Spain, which specializes in heritage and technology, followed by three days of in-person practical training at La Ruta Maya between April 14 and 16, 2026.

The practical course was led by Dr. Jeffrey P. Du Vernay, Deputy Chief Scientist of Global Digital Heritage (GDH); Dr. Víctor Manuel López-Menchero Bendicho, Scientific Director of GDH in Spain and the Balkans; and Néstor F. Marqués from KORÉ (archaeologist, specialist in technology applied to heritage, professor, and cultural communicator specializing in 3D virtualization)

At the end of the training week, GDH donated a complete photogrammetry kit to the UVG Archaeology Department so that students can continue working with museum collections and sharing Guatemalan heritage with the world.
