La Ruta Maya Foundation is the only private organization in the region that seeks to recover archaeological objects that have left the country in past decades, with the purpose of repatriating them to Guatemala.
The Foundation also receives objects as donations, both nationally and internationally, therefore is responsible for the custody and management of more than 3,000 objects. All are duly registered as cultural heritage of the Nation in the Register of Cultural Property of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, thus complying with current legislation.
The collection is kept for the purpose of custody, protection, conservation, research, and public display for educational purposes, making it available to researchers and scholars.
The Ruta Maya also has a library with more than 8,000 publications, which includes books, magazines, exhibition catalogs, photographs and interactive DVDs, as well as a selection of children’s books. The library includes the following topics: archaeology, anthropology, Pre-Columbian art, Maya epigraphy, art history, natural science and biodiversity conservation.
