Sofía Paredes Maury (MA) of La Ruta Maya Foundation participated in the lecture series organized by the Association of Private Natural Reserves of Guatemala, ARNPG (https://reservasdeguatemala.org/) on “The Jaguar, the Most Powerful Being in the Supernatural World.”
The jaguar was venerated as a spiritual protector and a symbol of royal power. Its supernatural significance mirrored its natural behavior. During the presentation, attendees were able to observe the characteristics of this formidable feline in extraordinary objects of Pre-Columbian art and in traditional dances, based on scientific research and oral tradition.
Attendees included owners of Natural Reserves engaged in voluntary conservation, tour guides, and primary school teachers. Also present were Dr. Miguel Torres, editor and co-author of the updated edition of “Natural History of the Kingdom of Guatemala” (by Fray Francisco Ximénez), and Alan Ramírez from the Education Department of the National Council of Protected Areas, CONAP (https://conap.gob.gt/). The event was hosted by Claudia García, director of ARNPG.
