“Jaguar Man”: The millenary Maya sculpture returns to exhibition in Guatemala after three years
Upon its return from an exhibition in Los Angeles, California, in November 2023, the sculpture remained in temporary custody awaiting authorization to carry out the necessary conservation process. The intervention was authorized through Administrative Resolution DGPCYN 163-2026, issued by the General Directorate of Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Sports (MCD) on March 26, 2026.
The conservation works primarily consisted of thorough cleaning and consolidation of stucco and pigments; retouching of cracks and fissures; and modification of its support base. The work was carried out by conservators Mtra. Norma García Huerta and Mtra. Elisa Ávila from L’Atelier Patrimonio & Conservación (Mexico), under the supervision of the Center for the Restoration of Movable Cultural Property (CEREBIEM) of the MCD, and with the support of Lic. Marissa López Mosel, Head of the Technical Unit & Projects at La Ruta Maya.
The packing, handling, transportation, and installation of the Jaguar Man were carried out by Embapaq Movers, under the supervision of foundation staff, the conservators, and the CEREBIEM representative.
Following the installation of the piece, conservators García Huerta and Ávila, together with Lic. López, organized a preventive conservation workshop and provided recommendations for the consolidation and maintenance of archaeological objects. The workshop was attended by staff from La Ruta Maya and conservators from CEREBIEM.
