At Fundación La Ruta Maya, we had the honor of welcoming the Ancestral Authorities of the Ixil Indigenous Council of San Juan Cotzal (Quiché), together with Dr. Adriana Linares Palma, who coordinates the research project “Ancient Material Culture in the Ixil Region: Archaeological and Ixil Perspectives on the Kamaviil”, funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation. As part of this research, the delegation is visiting several museums in Guatemala City.
During their visit to our facilities, they learned about our work in the recovery of Pre-Columbian cultural heritage (through voluntary returns from within and outside the country) and consulted the documentary holdings related to the Ixil region preserved in our extensive library, including books and maps from the early and mid-20th century.
In the storage room, they selected several objects of possible Ixil provenance, currently held in custody by the Foundation, for inclusion in their documentation, photography, and cataloguing project.
Visits such as this enrich knowledge in both directions regarding the use and meaning of ancestral objects, while also fostering new channels of communication and opportunities for cooperation.
